Alright so sorry about not recording last week (and also sorry for not recording this week), but we may as well post this year's Halloween CD track listing. Many of you gave us suggestions and for that we thank you. We actually used a lot of suggestions from our Star Trek circle.

Some of you Star Trek geeks may be interested to know that we intercut many of these songs with lines from the classic TOS episode "Catspaw" (considered to be the original "Star Trek Halloween Special." If you're a fan of the TV show Community, the songs not mixed with Star Trek clips are mixed with last year's Community Halloween special.

Magazine, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Mick Smiley and Visage are pretty sweet '80s acts. The Visage song, in particular, is a cover of an old '60s song (which is very prominent in the movie Gentlemen Broncos if you ever saw that). The Mick Smiley song we used is a remix known only during a pivotal apocalyptic scene in a certain movie about guys who bust ghosts.

Pink Floyd, of course, is very '70s -- although "One of These Days" sounds more modern than when it was released (1971 -- surprisingly before Dark Side of the Moon).

The Aquabats, Morrissey, Arrested Development and Stone Temple Pilots are, of course, stuff we listened to in the dark days of the '90s.

Queens of the Stone Age, The Decemberists, The Mars Volta, Karen Elson and Spoon are, more or less, contemporary (the Karen Elson CD is so brilliant by the way). The North American Hallowe'en Prevention Inc. was, I guess, some sort of "Band-aid"-like charity group featuring such celebrities as Beck, Feist, Arcade Fire, Devendra Banhart, Elvira, David Cross, Rilo Kiley, Wolf Parade & Thurston Moore.

J.R. and Jon hilariously composed a couple of spoken word versions of "happy" songs and sort of Halloweenized them.

Podcast 89: Plan DS9 From Outer Space

B.S. happened. If you wanna get right into the Star Trek talk, skip ahead to 46:32. SPOILER ALERT, once again, we're not excited to talk DS9. I mean we get naked old ladies, sailboats and a bunch of Kira's old terrorist friends again. We may as well have had Greek new age musicians on the podcast because YAWN-ni.

So, okay, this particular podcast nearly broke records in length. No idea how that happened. As you will hear shortly, not that much was said about these episodes. Very weird. Must have been the Saturday afternoon recording time. Also -- this tends to happen when podcasts creep over 2 1/2 hours -- the end audio is mixed a bit screwy, causing the end theme music to blast louder than it ought to be. Don't let that discourage you from listening to all seven minutes of outtakes. Actually, those, like always, are very expendable.

Vacation Live Chat Vol. 1!

Alright folks, let's try this thing out. We've had a couple of requests to try the live chat thing on a weekend, so here goes.

Saturday, February 12th at 11am MST (that's 10 in Cali, 1 on the east coast, I'm guessing about 6pm in England, about 8pm in Germany and (roughly) 2am the next day in Australia) let's do the listener live chat. Hopefully we can get enough people together that we can record something. I admit, however, that my primary reason for doing this is selfish. If we just spend a couple of hours chatting it up, rather than actually recording a podcast, so be it. The chatting up is funner and more important.

Perhaps J.R. can get into the chatroom, but he won't be able to voice anything.

vacation!

Any of you who follow J.R. on Twitter know that he's moving from a third world country back to the Unites States. As a result, all his possessions will be on a slow boat toward America for the next six weeks or so. That means it will be impossible to record again until March-ish. In the meantime, and with your help, the podcast has three options:

1) Do nothing until then. This is default.

2) Record a Jon-only episode with a full chat room. It would be sort of a Q and A. J.R. won't be around to deny anything, so if anybody has any questions or just wants to talk about whatever, we could do that. No doubt I have information on the guy that would make for exciting listening. If it's not exciting, I could just lie. If you'd like to do this, we'd need to have a pretty full chatroom in order to get some semblance of a conversation. Please email what times would be best and if it happens we can try to make a time that would yield the best crowd.

3) Upload an awesome clip show. If we do this, we'll need some volunteers to sort through some old podcasts. The more the better and the easier.

It also wouldn't be unheard of to do some combination of all three options. Please volunteer! Best volunteer may get a mug -- or something else maybe. If you'd like to do the chat show, send in your time preferences. If you'd like to hear a clip show just say you do and I'll give you a small assignment.

We broadcasted in a digital snowstorm this time. It was caused by an ill-advised attempt at computer progress (buying the next OS X and then having Soundtrack to decide to not work with something so "advanced"). Hopefully Soundtrack and Photoshop and Cyberduck will be fixed by the next recording. We should just broadcast from our adobe kiln on Bajor's moon.

Here are Justin's comments for Insurrection. Misplaced them on that particular podcast. If y'all like reading this, we may post a lot more on the blog in the future.

Insurrection.

The first TNG movie not written by Braga and Moore but scribed by the series' former executive producer Michael Piller, the man who took over the show in the third season and saved the show.

Insurrection is the re-write of his original screenplay. The original premise was essentially Star Trek: Apocalypse Now in which Data goes crazy (par for the course) but sets himself up as the leader of the Baku and Picard is sent to destroy him and does actually succeed in killing him, but then a whole conspiracy is revealed and it finds Picard and crew actually rebelling against the entire Federation and Starfleet and not just Admiral Doherty and the Son'a. It had the potential to being the darkest, grittiest Trek movie ever, but Patrick Steward (executive Producer Patrick Stewart that is) got wind of it, hated it and said, "let's do funny." Because, it worked so well in Stark Trek 5, right?

Taking place in the latter half of the DS9's 7th season, they don't even try that hard to expalin Worf's presence, just a brief off-screen remark that he was at the Manzar Colony. Since you guys are going to be watching DS9 the events that were taking place at this time in Trek history and for Worf in particular, will make you realize why the fans of DS9 cried foul at his just "appearing there" because it was a TNG movie. on DS9, the Federation was fighting a 2 year-long war against the Dominion and Worf's wife had just been murdered by a Cardassian. Not the best time to give him Klingon puberty

So Data can now remove his emotion chip? What, did Brent Spiner get tired of having emotions? He seems to be Season One Data again, learning to play tag in the wheat fields with little boys.

Once again we see Riker's combat skills at work. Let's give a brief rundown of Riker's tactical abilities. In

In Rascals he let two salvaged Klingon birds of prey, crewed by a bunch of Ferengi, cripple and capture the Enterprise. The man fired one shot! A “point seven-five burst” to “get their attention.” In Generations the Duras sisters got a hold of the Enterprise’s shield frequencies and started firing madly, Riker again, fired one phaser shot and then came up with some technological solution to getting the Klingon’s shields down. Here he fires a couple of torpedoes then essentially throws gasoline on the Son'a and lights them on fire.

The Son'a. What a waste of F. Murray Abraham. if you look at the special features or read any of the behind the scenes stuff, you'll find Rick Berman constantly trying to find a new Kahn for a villian. Let's face it, there was no one that can duplicate what Montalban did with Kahn, so you really need to stop trying to come up with Trek's "ultimate villian." JJ Abrams realized this when he had a Romulan truck driver become the villian in last year’s movie.

At its core it really was a Trek tale, following the Prime Directive and so forth. But it was a glorified episode with “wacky” moments with firm boobs, flotation devices, Klingon pimples, Riker shaving, Picard doing the MAMBO and a CGI little chipmunk created to pre-empt Jar Jar Binks and as annoying CGI in the late 90’s.

But it did have its moments. The crew standing together with Picard to save the Baku, Geordi seeing a sunrise and Riker and Deanna finally getting together.

But the whole movie collapsed with this one scene:

“Mister Worf, do you know Gilbert and Sullivan?”

“No, sir, I have not had a chance to meet all of the new crewmembers since I’ve been back.”

Queue the bouncing ball lyrics. Who would’ve thought that Data could be incapacitated the same way Sideshow Bob was?

Best Villian: Data.

Favorite Name: Adhar Ru'afo

Hot Chick Budget: Stephanie Niznik as Kell Perim, Enterprise’s new helmswoman.

Hot Dude Budget: Michael Horton as Lt. Daniels. Finally been promoted to Bridge duty after retreating down many hatches and getting his butt handed to him by the Borg in First Contact.

Favorite Planet: The Manzar Colony. A strategically placed world to the plot of the movie where Worf was apparently vacationing.

Favorite Cameo: Gate McFadden as Beverly Crusher, because apparently she had 4 lines in the entire film.

Favorite Technology: The razor, because it lures Deanna Troi into a bath tub. Followed up closely by Star Trek Fan’s most hated piece of tech. The manual steering column. Still curious to what the trigger actually does.

Podcast 67: Getting a Gross, Stretchy Insurrection

Get this, the Enterprise heads to a planet that's like a paradise. But every paradise has a serpent. Heard this story before? Even if you never read Genesis you've probably seen at least a half dozen Star Trek episodes with this same premise.

This was recorded on a very important Groundhog Day. Hoping to get this posted before the Lost premier, but it was simply an impossibility. Oh well. Hey, despite the title of this one, we talked about a lot of hot chicks -- so many in fact that we didn't have room to discuss the episode with Famke Janssen. Overall, some pretty good eps this time around, with one that's not worth mentioning.

Don't you think Geordi would've gotten deja vu before Beverly? I mean, he's the one with the visor with the residual images. They needed Crusher to be a bit more useful, perhaps.

Btw, Elliot emailed in his comments on the "Unification" episodes, but somehow we missed them during the recording. Here's a bit of what he had to say:

Unification I: A looooot of buildup to get to the moment we were all waiting for -- Spock emerging from the shadows. Anyway, before all that, there's a whole episode to discuss. Perhaps my favorite part of the episode is the scene between Picard and a dying Sarek -- great to see Mark Lenard, one last time. Excellent performance.

In an episode about diplomats, nice to see Picard work his magic while requesting a Bird of Prey -- courteous but firm, with a slightly threatening posture. But really, why is it such a big deal to borrow one friggin' Bird of Prey? They seem to have thousands of them. Gowron's newfound grandiose sense of self is a nice touch -- it will grow and fester, well into DS9.

Stephen Root as a Klingon captain! Very cool. Of course, Root played Milton in 'Office Space', Bill Dauterive in 'King of the Hill', and Jimmy James in 'Newsradio', among many other fantastic performances. The man has range. "Hahahahaha. Don't you two look sweet!"

Unification II: And once again the second part is slightly underwhelming. Good teaser -- references to Star Trek VI, Spock and Picard debating the merits and methods of unification. Also, in one conversation Spock compares Picard to both his father and Kirk.

While it is a real geeky joy to watch Spock and Picard converse and debate, the episode starts falling apart once Sela is revealed. An intriguing story about age old conflict and reconciliation is dragged down by a stupid invasion conspiracy. I guess I just don't like Sela, because the rest of the episode isn't that bad. Her presence somehow makes the scope of the episode seem small -- the same person is constantly behind every single Romulan conspiracy? And why in the world would she lock an android, a Vulcan, and a Starfleet captain in an office, by themselves, without supervision? Did she really think that such a collection of minds wouldn't be able to figure out how to extricate themselves from the situation?

And how are you going to invade Vulcan with only 2000 troops? Do the Romulans really think the Federation wouldn't retaliate? The whole thing just seems stupid.

Interesting that Troi uses her feminine wiles in Part I to get some information, then Riker turns on the beard charm in Part II to get what he wants. The bar scenes were actually pretty good, giving off that old noirish, gumshoe vibe. Oh, and the first appearance of Klingon opera.

Hey, a real important thing we forgot to mention that's probably pretty obvious: Spock was still on Romulus completing his mission there to set up the new J.J. Abrams movie. We really should have made that connection. Maybe viewer mail should have said so too! Ever think of that?

Notice we have a NEW POLL up that you only have until the nines (09/09/09) to vote on. We're planning on playing the Star Trek Drinking Game again for one of the last episodes of season four. Also, we're planning on focusing on a specific character within the episode. For example, "The Host" is an episode primarily about Beverly, so if "The Host" wins, the plan is to diligently abide by the "Beverly Crusher rules" of the drinking game.

Anyway, pick the episode (and character) you most want all of us to participate in. There is a chance we'll make adjustments.

A weird note, in our post-podcast research. The actress who plays Marie Picard is only four years younger than the actor who plays Robert Picard. I thought it was a 20 year difference. Whoops!

Our Rules For Star Trek Drinking Game

As you know, we're planning on watching "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" whilst participating in the Star Trek Drinking game. We don't recommend actually playing the game with alcohol. We're very temperate ourselves, plus if you actually read the rules, you won't be able to get through an entire TNG episode without succumbing to alcohol poisoning within the first 10 minutes of the show. If you truly wanted to do it the J.R./Jon way, the beverage of choice would be a gallon of root beer spiced up with a cup of salt.

ANYWAY, we've discussed it and decided that if you'd like to play along, we're just going to abide by the "general quotes" section and the two "Worf" sections. That way we won't need to consult five pages of rules for every five seconds of show. So here are the tamer rules, which will be far easier to follow:

So like, there was a lot of background noise in this one for the first 40 minutes or so. Don't worry, just pretend that you're in the middle of a highly intellectual conversation at a really ritzy cocktail party -- except you can't see anybody, most of the guests have the voices of little kids and what you're talking about is an alien technology that allows you to teleport clothing off of women without their consent.

We cover five episodes of NextGen in this particular podcast. Most of them involve obsessiveness and kidnapping.

Belated Vacation Photos...

It may be a little while before another podcast comes along, so in the meantime, I thought I'd share some of the photos I took when I went to visit Monterey and we saw the new movie.

Yep. Here I am in Los Angeles. You can tell because of the massive tool smiling behind me.

Here I am at LAX during my long layover. Guess what I did? Yep. I stared at Beverley Crusher.

Here is the annoying Twin Peaks spoiler. It was the first thing I read in the in-flight magazine. What are the odds? How did they know I was watching Twin Peaks at the exact same time?

Here's the plane to Monterey. I hardly ever have a plane with no movable hallway jetway thingie. So quaint. Felt like I was in the 1940s or something.

The soundboard I packed along ripped a big hole in my new suitcase. It was a soundboard we didn't even bother using.

There's my luggage and my free reading book. Don't judge!

Ahh. Here are the two of us eating at some Indian joint that serves some awesome fire-hot tandoori. As I type this, I'm so terribly hungry. Notice the dorky shirt that J.R. is wearing.

Here we are at the movie! For some reason we felt out of place in our Star Trek gear. If you can't wear a Star Trek uniform to a Star Trek movie on opening day, when can you wear it? Sheesh. It's too bad Star Trek is all mainstream now. We have nowhere to scurry to.

The next day we hit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. George and Gracie weren't there anymore. The big probe log from Star Trek IV came and took them. Actually we didn't bother going in. We just got our picture taken out front.

Free chowder! This is what the future is like!

Podcast 34: Horga'hn(g) Take Me Away!

Check this out! Not four, not five, not SIX, but SEVEN episodes covered in this podcast -- IN UNDER TWO HOURS! Zoppity boppity. First we tag the early episodes we missed a few months ago and then we wrap around for three new ones. We got annoying kids, slimy feet, boobys (traps), planet maroonings, wormholes, head gear, pleasure planets, love stories, Klingons, throwing knives, xeno-cannibalism and hands-on archeology. Sounds like the plot of The Princess Bride.

Hey here's something we discovered in the post-production process of this set that is sort of funny! The resident archeologist of The Enterprise dies in "The Bonding." Later, at the end of "Captain's Holiday," Vash asks Picard, "Is there any room for an archeologist on board?" How did we miss that?

Hey, here's our big podcast about the freaking movie! It's a bit rough since we didn't edit it and we're without our usual theme music, but you've held through worse. At the beginning we have us in the theater chatting some people up before the show. At the end of the podcast we have another small recording talking to Jimmy, who we met while sitting next to us.
