Podcast 140: Menos Christmas!

Ugh. It's the 21st century and you wouldn't believe how many stupid variables there are nowdays for posting a stupid podcast. Things should be easier than they were when we started this thing. Alas, 'tis not the case. We did try a recording through the YouTube option of Google Hangouts, so the quality may sound a little more phone-y than usual in case you're wondering.

Merry Christmas peeps! We've provided two gifts this time around. The first gift is that we start talking Star Trek IMMEDIATELY. Fun stuff with Klingons and sickbay and Vulcan mind games and... communicators.

Podcast 139: We Have Romulans Yet Again

Yep, this one's late again. Hey, we're working with better hardware that picks up far more flaws. Give us a break.

So where were we with Enterprise? Ah yes. Starting season 2. The Romulans are back. Well, they're "introduced" anyway. So does the Enterprise creative team pull off the introduction? We gotta keep in mind that they're handicapped by a few things that were established "later" in TOS. They can't show the Romulans themselves, they can't acknowledge the Romulans are related to Vulcans and they can't show the cloaking device at work (fine, one cheat out of three ain't bad).

All this plus a few mild bonuses! Listen to us list off the ten saddest songs ever. If any of your sad songs overlap with any of ours, I'd be very very surprised. It can be argued that neither of our number one sad songs qualify to be on the list for completely different reasons.

Btw, when Jon was joking about a different version of "Winner Takes it All," he was probably thinking of the Sammy Hagar version from the Over the Top soundtrack.

J.R. referred to the singer from Yaz as a "he." This, of course, is silly since the lead singer of Yaz is Alison Moyet.

Speaking of Yaz (Yazoo in England), the album You and Me Both opens with Jon's #2 sad song, "Nobody's Diary" and then the second track on the album is J.R.'s #5 sad song, "Softly Over." Could this be the saddest two-song opening of any album ever?

J.R. and Jon's Austin-tacious Journey Vol. 2

Here's the second bit of correspondence from the Austin trip. This time it's on the way out of the city during a dark and dangerous night.

Besides a band by band recap of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, we also went into detail about the incredible Franklin Barbecue and the Master Pancake version of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves at Alamo Drafthouse.

Btw, the drummer for Spanish Gold is in My Morning Jacket I think. On the podcast I thought it was Drive-By Truckers. I knew it was some critically acclaimed band with a lousy weird name.

We almost died by running through what we thought was a yellow light in the middle of nowhere. Later, we almost died again when we nearly hit a deer.

J.R. and Jon's Austin-tacious Journey Vol. 1

So J.R. and I met up IRL to go to the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, Texas. This little recording is just what we talked about on the way to the city. There's very little Star Trek talk, so if that's your thing, you may not enjoy this. Actually, I don't know what your thing even is if you enjoy this at all, but it may help pass the time (or perhaps make time slower).

Podcast 138: Sub Standards

It took a long time to watch all these submarine movies. It took a long time to record this podcast. It took a long time to get around to posting this podcast. I'm not going to bore you with a long paragraph now.

We took a break from Star Trek to hit up something sort of similar to Trek, in that it's a bunch of people in a metal tube floating through a space-like area. Smellier though. The movies in our submarine discussion are Das Boot, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and K-19: The Widowmaker. Listen for incredible music undertones (one of which is called "Black Widow" and not "Widowmaker" -- still, it's Iggy Azalea for the win).

Podcast 137: The Dark Nights Risa

Sorry everyone who emails in, but we did a sort of impromptu recording without sending out the notice email. Hopefully you don't mind too much if you're still listening.

This is our first Enterprise season wrap-up and it's full of the mildest surprises ever. For instance, one episode made one of our top five and the same episode made the other one's bottom five. Enterprise is pretty good, but it does have the problem of a forgettable consistency. Also, please try to live in the 22nd century instead of the 24th, Enterprise! Don't worry, the same complaints are in the podcast. J.R.'s having way more fun with it, so that's really what matters.

Full disclosure. At one point I (Jon) uttered a major grammatical error while discussing "Word Crimes." I was going to own it and call it out, but I chickened out and just edited it out of the recording entirely (because I can and because I'm ashamed). No doubt there are several other errors though. See how many you can find.

Podcast 136: Blunderwear

This took a weekend longer to get live than I thought. Lots to speak of this week. What, with World Cup action, continued planning for Austin City Limits, chats with listeners and non-White Stripe music to go through it's amazing we got through it in under three hours. Most people would swim through this stuff like Michael Phelps, but we tend to wade through it like that chubby guy at the beach who goes into the water with his shirt on. BONUS: we also talked a little bit of Star Trek: Enterprise!

Could it be that Enterprise has jumped the shark already? I mean, we start things right off with the 22nd century crew meeting 24th century Ferengi. Deplorable, right? Apparently, not for both of us. Also, new ground for both Reed and Mayweather! All this and one, count 'em, ONE girl! It is very cold in space.

Podcast 134: More or Less Human Than Human

I know a lot of you in the live chat were expecting the title of this podcast to something like "Sleeping Targhs Lie" or "Let Slip the Targhs of War" or maybe "Targh Day Afternoon." Couldn't decide between all those.

I'm also kicking myself for not relating Mars Attacks! to the aliens in "Silent Enemy." Isn't it just like that show? "Okay, we're gonna give you aliens ONE more chance to not attack us for no reason."

Note at about 18:40 in the episode "Civilization" there's an unwanted camera bump.

We should have spoken about it, but I didn't realize at the time that Mayweather's musings about desiring to use the transporter because "it would be fun to be in two places at once" perfectly mirrors his conflict with having a foot in the space freight universe and another foot in the Starfleet universe. Foreshadowing, allusions and symbolism people!

Checked out my Star Trek Encyclopedia and this is what it says about warp travel:

Notice that warp 1 is the speed of light while warp 2 is 10 times the speed of light. Warp 4 is 102 times the speed of light. Remember how according to that speed limit episode called "Force of Nature" warp 5 is the new Federation cruising speed? Well that's 214 times the speed of light. Sound fast? It isn't. At warp 5 it would take 468 years to cross Federation space. Warp 9.9999 is apparently the maximum subspace radio speed with booster relays. Apparently even subspace radio takes six months to cross Federation space. Warp 10 is theoretically occupying all points in the universe simultaneously (guess it's not theoretical since that's what they did in "Threshold).

Okay, we're committed now, because this is our second podcast devoted to Enterprise. So far, so good. Fingers crossed. It's not super terrible so far. The bold new journey is further emboldened by our crazy use of Google Hangout. We'll let you be the judge regarding the idea to just allow any listener to barge in at any time during the recording.

By the way, when I say something about "in the words of a famous deli artist," I'm pretty sure I'm actually talking about something I saw in an Arby's commercial once.

Sounds like I also forgot to list my favorite technology of this set. I think I'll go with the way the universal translator needs to sort itself out for a few sentences before it starts working.

Podcast 131: Broken Bow Movements

This podcast takes on a whole new enterprise. Just a little heads up about what happened behind the scenes. We spent an hour trying to get Justin.tv to work (the problem was probably site maintenance) and finally switched over to Google Hangouts. The result was relatively successful. We'll obviously be working out a few kinks on this if it's an additional enterprise we'll need to take on. Possibly as a result of technical chat troubles, this is our shortest 'cast in several years. Looks like you get a small break from listening.

But anyway, here's Enterprise! Is it as we feared and a bigger burden than Voyager? Well, it turns out the ship has a giant grapple, so it can't be that bad. Our biggest regret, though, is not realizing that the Vulcan ambassador is the main guy in Robot Jox.

Btw, it looks like one of the audio edits slipped into the past about five seconds during the viewer mail portion at about 38:10. The result is a little bit of overlapping audio (Jon sounds like he stepped into Night Lizard Future Emperor's time room for a moment) followed by five seconds of silence. Please don't use that as an excuse for a bad iTunes review!

Strap yourself in as we review the last of what J.R. calls the "muffintop episodes" (which really formed a nice little completion complex context).
